Divination was formed in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1995 by Matt McCullough (vocals), John Galeassi (bass), and John Scherrer (drums). Originally conceived as a Death Metal band, Divination released the "God's End" demo which in 1997 was a local success. The follow up to “God’s End”, "Obsessed," their first CD, was released in January of 1999 and also met with limited local success. One of their songs, also titled "Obsessed," was included on "Orchestrated Chaos - Volume 2," compilation CD featuring death metal bands from across the country, which was released by Soulside Records in 1997.
1999 and 2000 brought on significant changes to the Divination lineup in the form of Jay Denunzio (Fatal Aggression, In Ruins) and Chuck Lazarz (416 South) respectively. Jay and Chuck signified a change in direction for Divination as each guitarist had no actual Death Metal background in the form of performance or musical taste and brought their Thrash/Hardcore/Progressive influences to the band. Although those influences did not immediately push Divination away from their Death Metal roots, they did result in other CD releases including the DRP Records "Gimme the Medicine" compilation (2001) and "Three Nails of Fate" (2003) which proved to be Divination’s most competent and successful album to date. Divination was also featured on 2003's "Gimme the Medicine 2" from DRP Records, and the "From the Shadows" compilation out on DM Records featuring Anthrax, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and many more.
2005 saw the exit of vocalist Matt McCollough and the addition of vocalist Brad Miller and bassist Mike Stoltzfus. The addition of Miller and Stoltzfus in 2006 proved to be just the thing Divination needed to break free of its Death Metal chains and gave the band some latitude in exploring new directions and sounds previously considered taboo.
With the help of the Reading underground, Divination has played many shows in the Reading area that have led to bigger shows along the East Coast with Broken Hope, Crisis, Voi-Vod, Pro-Pain, Six Feet Under, Deceased, Immolation, Burnt by the Sun, Total Fucking Destruction, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Goatwhore.. Through these shows, they have amassed a loyal following. Divination is constantly striving to play their best and to push themselves to the next level.
